Tempted. Solomon let himself drift and, little by little, the commandments might have been forgotten, become not practical, or even far-fetched. Could it be that his wealth and wisdom gave him a sense of security and power? We are not sure, but the Bible did mention that he disobeyed God who gave him all the wisdom, riches, and honor.
An Emotional Trap
The foreign women in King Solomon's story symbolize any non-Christian person whom we are considering to be involved with in a relationship, or even marry.Subsequently, we may well be in the same situation as King Solomon — in that our hearts will be turned away from God.
Someone may then ask: "If King Solomon with all his power and wealth fell, are we stronger or wiser than him? Are we immune from falling?" The answer is that we are not. We wish that such immunity did exist in order to prevent many mistakes, falls, and heartaches; and to allow us to live holy for the Lord.
If you think about it, Satan will not present us with an ugly, or less than average person. Instead, a handsome man or a beautiful woman, a smart and happy person, who may be a non-Christian, will come our way. We convince ourselves that he or she is perfect in every other aspect, except when it comes to their religion, or spirituality. You then start compromising: "Maybe if I go out with him once, I will see if he is truly that good of a person, or not."
You start spending time together and growing closer. At this point, the thought of breaking up is further removed from your mind and you rationalize: "Surely, since we like each other, things could be worked out. It is not fair that, just for religion's sake, we cannot be together." You may even add, "Although spirituality is lacking, I may witness to him, and win him for Christ. After all, isn't that what Christianity tells us to do? God is love, and He does not want anyone to be lost, and maybe He wants me to bring him to Christianity. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Practically, it is quite uncommon to witness him about the Lord, and see how he is progressing spiritually, without getting emotionally involved.
