"We cannot erase the past and its memories. The Lord had plans. My brothers meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, in order to save many people's lives."
"For Joseph's brethren did indeed injure him, yet he himself was not injured: and Cain laid snares for Abel, yet he himself was not ensnared.
This is the reason why there are penalties and punishments. For God does not abolish penalties on account of the virtue of those who suffer; but he ordains punishments on account of the malice of those who do wickedly."
– St. John Chrysostom, 4th–5th Century A.D.
Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers Series – Treatise: No One Can Harm The Man Who Does Not Injure HimselfHe then took a moment, and continued...
"In situations like the ones just described, the devil plays many games, and slowly takes control of the mind and feelings in order to carry out his evil plans. The devil wants to lead human beings to commit any sin, irrespective of the type of that sin.
Sin, with its deceitfulness, if it takes control of one's life, will lead to hardness of the heart – and that can happen to anyone, whether a brother or an enemy.
Also, once the heart is hardened, you can expect all sorts of evil deeds to ensue.
Sin causes the heart to be hardened, and a hardened heart will be inclined to yield more sins. The key point here is not allowing the devil to take charge of one's life by letting sin into one's heart."
"But exhort one another daily, while it is called 'Today,' lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin." (Hebrews 3:13)
